This
edition of Fair Grounds is dedicated to World Fair Trade
Day, which was celebrated Saturday, May 14th, and which we
encourage all to continue celebrating throughout the year.
In this issue of Fair Grounds, you'll read about
our producer partner friends at La Asociacion Civil Maya
de Productores of Santa Anita in Colomba, Guatemala, with
whom Lee, Tripp and Bill visited this past February. They
are a true inspiration to the Fair Trade movement (and
we're featuring a special on their coffee in this issue).
We've also got a Community Caravan update, Customer
Spotlight and Fair Trade Partner, plus a new recipe, fair
trade fact and trivia question. Kick back with a cup of
Cafe Campesino and read on...

On
Saturday, May 14th, supporters of Fair Trade celebrated
World Trade Day, “an annual opportunity to promote Fair
Trade as a way to improve lives, participate in the
worldwide Fair Trade movement, and make positive
connections to other countries,” as articulated by the
Fair Trade Resource Network (FTRN). The FTRN, this
month’s featured Fair Trade Partner in Fair Grounds,
has published a list of ten things that we all can do to
support Fair Trade. We encourage everyone to use this list
and take action so that every day is Fair Trade Day!
-
Buy
Fair Trade items online. Every purchase improves the
life of a producer family in Asia, Africa, Latin
America or another developing region. Check out www.fairtradefederation.org
for Fair Trade online catalogs. Fair Trade products
make great gifts for your friends and relatives! Find
a store near you that stocks Fair Trade products, or
pick up a catalog. The Fair Trade Federation website
has lists of both.

On
May 15th, Lee and Tripp traveled to Atlanta to celebrate
World Fair Trade Day with our friends at Ten
Thousand Villages,
sampling Café Campesino coffee and talking Fair Trade
with Ten Thousand Villages’ customers.
Reports
have been circulating that while Lee and Tripp were in
Atlanta, Bill was actually seen running in this year’s
Run Americus, which benefits the New Horizons Habitat for
Humanity. Bill and our loyal friend (and customer) Bonnie
Sullivan served Café Campesino for the event, donating
all proceeds to this great cause, though we’re still
waiting for photographic proof of Bill’s run – we’ll
keep you posted!
The
weekend of May 21-22 is going to be a busy one for Los
Tres Amigos – Lee, Bill and Tripp. On Saturday, May
21st, Café Campesino will be served at the Georgia
Organics' Savannah Organic Weekend Saturday morning brunch
at the Starfish Cafe.
Later
that day, Café Campesino will be at its longtime customer
and dedicated Fair Trade advocate The Sentient Bean in
Savannah from 3 to 6 PM, sampling our Fair Trade, organic
coffee and talking Fair Trade with the customers of
Savannah's biggest and best coffee house. Just around the
corner, Georgia Organics will be hosting an inspiring talk at the main branch
of the Chatham County Library by Peter Broadhead, owner of Brighter Day Market, about
organic foods and farming.
On
Sunday, May 22nd, Café Campesino will be served at the
Georgia Organics' Savannah Organic Weekend Sunday Organic
Dinner at one of Savannah's finest restaurants -
Gottlieb's.
From
5 to 7 PM on Wednesday evening, the 25th of May, Tripp,
Lee and Bill will be sampling Café Campesino coffee and
talking about Fair Trade with our local friends at The
Maze’s Casa de Caffe coffee shop, a new partnership of
ours to move the beans out of the bag and into the cups of our fellow citizens in Americus.

Café Campesino is delighted to introduce you to one of
our long-standing customers, The Crimson Moon Café, which
opened its doors in October of 2001 as a gallery of
eclectic art and decorative antiques on the historic
“public square” of Dahlonega, Georgia, about an hour
north of Atlanta. Shortly after launching their gallery,
The Crimson Moon opened its authentic 'coffee house' in
the back “saloon” area of the 150 year-old building
under the creative guidance of Café Manager, Fawnna Egizi.
Serving only organic, shade grown, fairly traded coffees
and teas and locally made baked goods, The Crimson Moon
Café & Coffee House has become a favorite “hang
out” for locals, visitors, and students who relish a
comfortable and supportive environment for relaxation,
study, or conversation. Patrons also enjoy a wide variety
of great “tunes” played from the personal music
collections of the owner and the staff of “The Moon”:
contemporary folk; vintage & contemporary blues;
classic jazz; traditional 'mountain music...bluegrass
& old time; haunting Celtic; and a variety of
'world–folk' that speaks to The Crimson Moon Café's
inherent philosophy of tolerance and support for
creativity throughout all cultures. The Crimson Moon is
open Wednesday-Saturday: 8 am-11 pm+ and Sunday: 10 am - 6
pm+. They are located at 24 North Park Street in
Dahlonega, GA – their phone number is 706.864.3982.

their website at: www.thecrimsonmoon.com.

The
Fair Trade Resource Network's roots are in the Fair Trade
Federation (FTF), a North American trade association of
retailers, wholesalers, and producers committed to
operating according to Fair Trade standards. When it began
in 1994, FTF worked both to educate consumers about Fair
Trade and to promote member businesses. In 2001, FTRN
became an independent nonprofit focusing on consumer
education and serves as the Fair
Trade Information Gateway for folks who want to know more
about and act on their commitment to Fair Trade. We encourage
our readers, customers and anyone who is interested in the
Fair Trade Alternative to visit the FTRN’s website and
take advantage of the wealth of information and resources
available there — www.fairtraderesource.org.

In
honor of World Fair Trade Day on May 14th, we offer a trio
of quotes:
“Peace
is not the product of a victory or a command. It has no
finishing line, no final deadline, no fixed definition of
achievement. Peace is a never-ending process, the work of
many decisions.”
-- Oscar Arias
"Poverty
is the worst form of violence.”
-- Gandhi
“Peace
comes from being able to contribute the best that we have,
and all that we are, toward creating a world that supports
everyone. But it is also securing the space for others to
contribute the best that they have and all that they
are.”
-- Hafsat Abiola
